How to File Your KRA Returns on iTax (2026 Step-by-Step Guide)

By Wakairu Consultants Updated Jul 2026 1 min read

In short

The individual return deadline is 30 June. Here is the exact iTax process end to end, including the P9 shortcuts most employees miss.

Filing your KRA returns on iTax takes about ten minutes once you have the right documents. Here is exactly how to do it — and how to avoid the mistakes that trigger a penalty.

Before you start: what you need

Have three things ready: your KRA PIN and iTax password, your P9 form (if you were employed at any point in the year), and details of any other income. If you have forgotten your password, reset it on the iTax portal before you begin.

Step 1 — Log in to iTax

Go to the KRA iTax portal, enter your PIN, complete the security stamp, and enter your password. This is the same portal used for every KRA filing, so it is worth bookmarking.

Step 2 — Open the return

Under the Returns menu, choose File Return, select Income Tax – Resident Individual, and download the return template, or use the pre-filled option where available.

Step 3 — Enter your figures and submit

Fill in your income and the PAYE already deducted, straight from your P9. Validate, upload, and download the acknowledgement receipt. That receipt is your proof of filing.

What happens if you miss the deadline

The individual return deadline is 30 June. File late and KRA charges a penalty of KES 2,000 or 5% of the tax due, whichever is higher. If you had no income, file a nil return to keep your PIN active.
